About 60 to 80 percent of all men in this country are affected by genetic hair loss. This form of hair loss first results in a visible receding hairline, later the hair on the top of the head thins out until a large area of baldness develops. Many women are also affected by hereditary hair loss. Their hair normally thins out at the crown line - baldness is very rare in women. Regaine, with the active ingredient minoxidil, is an option for both genders to combat genetic hair loss. Find out more about the effects and side effects here.
Regaine - from blood pressure medication to hair growth remedy
Originally, the active ingredient minoxidil was used in the 1970s in the USA as a drug to lower high blood pressure. The drug was administered in tablet form. It was found that hair growth increased as a side effect in the treated patients. Thus, studies were initiated that confirmed this efficacy.
Stimulating hair growth with Regaine: the application
Regaine hair stimulant is based on minoxidil and is applied externally. It is available in two different dosages:
- for men (5-percent solution or as a 5-percent Regaine foam)
- for women (2-percent solution)
You apply the Regaine foam or solution to the areas affected by hair loss. Men use the product twice a day, women once or twice a day, depending on the dosage used. It is applied with a pump spray, eyedropper or applicator.
When should Regaine with minoxidil not be taken?
Many medical professionals advise against taking Regaine with minoxidil if ...
- you are using another medicine applied locally to the scalp at the same time.
- your hair loss is not genetic or you have had a sudden increase in hair loss.
- your areas affected by hair loss are in the area of the forehead or temples.
- you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
The effects of Regaine
Exactly how Regaine with minoxidil works has not yet been fully clarified scientifically. It is assumed that the blood pressure-lowering effect causes the capillaries to dilate, which improves blood circulation. In addition, the resting phase that each of your hairs goes through during its life cycle is shortened - growth begins earlier. However, this also takes time: in many cases, hair growth could only be observed after about 12 weeks after taking Regaine.
Does Regaine work reliably and permanently?
Like many other hair growth products, Regaine with minoxidil has one major disadvantage: the effect wears off as soon as you stop taking the product. If you stop using the hair remedy, the hair loss will start again. In the long run, it is not only time-consuming to use the hair growth product, but also expensive. In addition, although your hair growth is stimulated, the former hair density, as you still know it from times without hair loss, is usually no longer achieved.
In addition, the treatment is not successful for every user. The effectiveness of Regaine for a receding hairline has not yet been proven. Likewise, the chances of a satisfactory result decrease for users who have extensive hair loss or have been bald for a long time.
Are there any risks associated with taking Regaine?
Especially at the beginning, the so-called shedding effect can occur: After about four to six weeks, more hair will fall out, which may limit your ability to socialise. Doctors assume that this is because new, stronger hairs are formed from the follicles, so that the existing hairs fall out. Hair growth only occurs after some time. Other possible side effects are itching, redness, rashes, headaches or an increase in blood pressure. Another undesirable effect is that your hair growth may increase in other parts of your body.
